This module is designed to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the conceptual frameworks and challenges to criminal law and its applications to terrorism. This course also allows students to focus on the fundamental properties of criminal law as it intersects with terrorism. It employs theoretical concepts and models, coupled with case studies based on the experiences of individuals who have interacted with the application of criminal law to terrorism and related criminal acts. This module explains the various frameworks of criminal law and how the application of domestic law and international laws are applied.
Learning Outcomes:
• Strategic analysis of crimes associated with terrorism and how they differ from other types of crime.
• The application of universal counter-terrorism instruments and their role in addition to regional and domestic counter-terrorism agreements.
• The role of the judicial process and challenges associated with prosecuting terrorism-related offenses.
• Analysis of current laws and how they may be applied when convicting leaders of terrorist organizations.
• Correlation between the actions of law enforcement and laws and terrorism recruitment and rhetoric.
• Analysis of the application of laws and legislation surrounding terrorist offenders and the implication on society.
• Understanding the programs and institutions put in place to prevent the funding of terrorist activities.
• Global initiatives and organizations that work to aid member states in their counter-terrorism measures.
• Historical perspective on events that have shaped the legal instruments available to combat terrorism and extremism, the Nuremberg Trials, United Nations Charters, and the United Nations Security Council.
